On October 7, 2023, a series of earthquakes, including a 6.6-magnitude quake, struck Herat, Afghanistan. The disasters led to widespread destruction, causing 2,000 to 4,000 fatalities, over 9,000 injuries, and more than 2,000 house destructions.
During this complex humanitarian emergency, Mosaic designed its interventions based on these needs.
In the wake of the October 7, 2023, earthquake, Mosaic swiftly initiated an emergency appeal on October 9, anticipating the urgent needs that would ensue.
Understanding the urgency and constrained local market conditions, Mosaic’s on-the-ground team diligently conducted a market analysis. The team meticulously identified specific villages to receive the tents. This involved listing their names and carefully evaluating the unique needs of each village to ensure an equitable distribution.

UNICEF's Humanitarian Response in 2023
In 2022, Afghanistan has experienced worsening disease outbreaks, economic decline, acute food insecurity, and devastating natural disasters. During the first half of the year, UNICEF scaled up its humanitarian response in the face of increasing needs. In the first six months of 2022, UNICEF and partners:
- Treated more than 300,000 children age 6 to 59 months for severe acute malnutrition.
- Provided humanitarian cash transfers to around 100,000 unique households.
- Provided 17.3 million people with out-patient health care.
- Reached more than 3.5 million people with safe water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.
- Reached 1.7 million children and their caregivers with a range of urgent child protection services including mental health and psychosocial support services.

Afghanistan continues to face many challenges as it strives to rebuild and strengthen its democracy. The security situation remains fragile, with the government still struggling to protect the civilians from harm. The economy is largely dependent on foreign aid and security-related spending, while poverty, unemployment and corruption remain widespread. In addition, the nation is experiencing challenges in its effort to rebuild its infrastructure and promote economic development.
What measures can be taken to reduce the number of people affected by poverty, hunger, and disease in Afghanistan?
Measures that can be taken include increasing access to education, providing access to health care services, promoting economic opportunities, improving access to clean water and sanitation, and providing food assistance and nutrition programs. Also, it is important to work with local communities to empower them to participate in decision-making and find ways to improve their situation.
How is UNICEF responding to the situation in Afghanistan?
At this pivotal moment in Afghanistan, UNICEF is taking action to ensure more children have access to education. UNICEF is providing textbooks to schools, training female teachers, and expanding Community-Based Education classes. Additionally, UNICEF is exploring alternative pathways to education, including financial support for small-scale initiatives and lessons on tablets, radio or TV. By taking these steps, UNICEF is committed to fostering a generation with greater rights and access to education.
